The lesson yesterday was on patience ~ the kids made ice candles. Here are the directions:
This activity is suited for colder, northern climates where snow and ice are usual winter fare. Creating lights in ice is easy and fun to do, and the flickering lights add a warm glow to a cold night.
SMALL CANDLES
Supplies:
Medium size balloon
Empty plastic margarine tub
Votive candle
Directions:
Fill the balloon with water until it is about the size of a softball, and add a drop of food coloring if you wish. Blow once into the balloon and then tie a knot in it. Place the balloon in the margarine tub and set outside in freezing temperature. If it is not cold enough to freeze outside, place it in your freezer. After 4-5 hours a fairly thick shell of ice should form inside the balloon. Check by shaking the balloon gently; if the outside is hard and water can be heard sloshing around inside, it is time to pop the balloon. Discard balloon. Pour excess water out to form a cavity in the middle. This is where the candle will be placed. Freeze candle holder for two hours, until it is very hard. At sunset, place votive candle in center of ice candle holder and light it. Place candle outside by your door to welcome visitors. Note: If the temperature is above freezing the next day, bring the candle holder inside and store in your freezer.
You can see that the patience comes in waiting for the candle holders to freeze. It was a great lesson as my dd kept checking the freezer to see if it was done yet!
