Random

A shot of five random things on our ever full fridge door. Some leaves that we just couldn't leave in the drive way, fossils found by the girls at geofest last year, our golden "Molly" , frecklednest.com magnet (do check out Leigh-Ann's goodies!), a stick person made by dd #2 last year, and a picture of her when she was almost 3.
Stefani has tagged me to share five random things about me.

1. I have a thing with rhythm.
I hear beats in everything, even walking down steps, it's like a time signature to life.
I can tell that helps in teaching music lessons and in my own guitar playing especially. I can help almost anyone with any instrument, understand rhythm, even if I can't play that instrument.
I think my oldest has a thing with rhythm too. She's shared with me when she figures out the time signature to any song we happen to hear. I've never told her about my rhythm thing.

2. I was a hairstylist for 10 years, and while I still do a few haircuts and colors a month, I do not miss working in a salon. Truly drama central.
The best thing that happened to me while I was still working, was meeting Emily in '96. By '98, we had our own placed called "Circle of Friends" and it rocked. I came home to be with my kids in '00, but those two years were the best two of my career.
We are now both godmothers to our daughters. I'm very thankful for her!

3.I spent most of my school years afraid other kids and of what they thought about me. That would surprise my folks, I think. But it is true.
I would say it was so true that it ruined any chance of my going to college right out of high school.
I finally went back to college when I was 24, but had the oldest at 25...so that elusive degree still hangs outside of my reach. Sometimes that springs a small amount of regret. But it's small.

4. I once wore bright green contacts. (I have light blue eyes)
Why did I think that was cool?

5. We have an abundance of animals ( or as my little guys say, "Aminals") right now. Molly the golden (7yrs old), Cooky Noel the calico cat (4 yrs old), Daddy (formally known as squeakers) the degu (2 yrs old), Chirppy the parakeet (possibly a year old) and two brand new to us as of yesterday, goldfish. Annie and Tom. I have no idea how old they are.
~And we went to the humane society this past Friday. They are full to the seams with dogs and cats, so we thought ( the oldest and I) that we should visit ....... we met Betty Lou. Oh what a wonderful dog. She loved us, we loved her, we called in the troops, (well, just the husband, dog and little kids) and she loved the kids. But then we brought Molly in the room, and poor BL cowered behind the adoption aide. She was so afraid of our sweet golden. We hemmed and hawed thinking that surely she would come around and see that Molly was nothing to be afraid of, but no. She would barely look at us. We'd severely disappointed her.
We choose to leave BL, knowing that she is loved by the volunteers there and that they will find her a good home. Sure, she may have come around eventually, but she also may have hid under a bed forever.
We plan to visit again soon, because you know 7 pets just isn't enough.

If you just can't stand it and you want more randomness... I can direct you to
~my 100 things list~

Added bonus ~ this is post number 97. Let's have a give-a-way! (It's the thing to do, didn't you know?) If you leave a comment between now and post number 100 listing your random five, or directing me to your own list of 5 at your blog, I will put your name a hat for a drawing to be done by the kids. I'll send you a goody box of crafty items, tea and treats! Come on ~ I want to see how many readers I really have!

"Your life is an occasion, rise to it."

The movie ~ fun

the quote ~ uplifting, not corny

The oldest and I looked at eachother as the credits rolled and both agreed, we liked it.

Sometimes I wonder how people can sit through a movie like this and not be moved in some way. How they can write it off as just a cheesy kids' flick and choose to miss the point? I guess it's the same way that they choose to make a life out of work and out of what is expected.

And now, a story in pictures

the end.

Not too long ago, we were holding a Massive Clean-up Event. You've done the same thing, right? M. C. events happened when you've completely lost your mind with the toys, parts, thingamajigs, crayons, scraps, books, shoes and socks all laying about.
Often during the M. C. event one might become very frustrated, and yet one wouldn't want to loose their temper ( you know, it just isn't nice....no love growing during those times....).
So instead of yelling, one might simply, even off-handedly, said,
"I think this Christmas will be a one gift Christmas. You guys have so much. Really, you are very lucky."
Imagine one's surprise when the reply comes,
"That's okay mom, you're right." ( the middle one)
"Yeah mom, we get stuff from grandparents and everyone....really, one gift is okay." (the oldest)
So one might play it off like she meant to say that...cuz you know she did, she's cool like that.

So wow. This year a one gift Christmas.....

Now, we also observe St Nickolas day. Which I love. We read all the stories and poems, print out the coloring and activity pages.
It is a tradition we chose to start when the oldest was very little. She was getting so wrapped up in Santa and Rudolph and I was already worried about her reaction at finding out the "truth", so we learned the truth about St Nick.
They will set their shoes outside their bedroom doors on Dec. 5th, on the morning of the 6th they will hold gold coins & little trinkets. Which is another reason why one gift for Christmas sounded okay... St Nickolas day brings several little goodies, all is not lost~!

So I find myself really considering the gifts this year, and with all the handmade talk about, I'm leaning toward these ideas:

knitting kit
puppet theater (found a pattern in a back issue of family fun)
leather work

what's turning your head this shopping season?

Wanna know something funny?

She thought she would ruffle me

by saying, "Mom?"

"Hmmmm?"

"I think I'll keep the pink, or maybe try new colors too."

I think I ruffled her by saying,

"I think you should!"

A birthday
How is it that six sneaks up on us? That the youngest, the baby, the little guy --- is six.
I know, everyone says that... but it is my turn. (insert a bit of a pout)
The birthday wasn't all that grand to be honest. We'd already partied it up with Halloween gigs. But the gift was grand.
Stefani was so kind as to put a tutorial on her blog, you can find it here. We were sneaky, sending him off to grandma's house one Sunday afternoon. The big sista was also gone, so we took the middle one and headed off to Lowe's for wood and Hobby Lobby for shrinky-dinks. Within an hour or so we were all finished, and more than a tad excited about our project!
Others gave him plastic action figures (truly his favorite toy, I'm buying a lead testing kit), dvds, batman crocs (really, you didn't know they made those?) and I know that he is really excited about those things too.
Yet he knows we built this for him, and so do I.
Next project.

~Some of our Halloween Magic~
